More catching on to Maintenance Crisis

In a recent interview with Ashley Halligan, an CMMS software analyst, we discussed what the maintenance crisis means for the future of, well, maintenance. Furthermore, Halligan wrote an article that talked about the crisis in detail along with some of the innovations that are changing it, including the recently launched Occupy a Job app, camps and courses for young folks to encourage interest into the skilled labor force, and gamification of maintenance training.

Nifty Fifty Session for US Science and Engineering Festival

Hope more volunteer to speak to students and encourage them to pursue Reliability and Maintenance Career paths, so that we have a viable pipeline of future workers.

THANK YOU! From the USA Science and Engineering Festival Nifty Fifty Program

Dear Mr. Leonard,

Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule Tuesday, March 13 to visit Patapsco High School! It was a great presentation and you were definitely a crowd pleaser. The students were engaged and inspired by the experiences and hands-on activities you shared. Your topic "Maintenance - Its Not Just Mops and Buckets" opened the students eyes to the desperate need and opportunities that are available to those who are interested in careers using science and technology. The use of the infrared camera and sound detector was truly the highlight of your presentation. I commend you on your high energy presentation and your ability to manage and engage the teens of today.
We can't thank you enough for devoting your time and energy to making this event a success and most especially for your stellar presentation. Your participation has been seminal to getting the festival off to a great start! The fact that you are willing to serve as a role model is so very important to bringing science back to center stage and inspiring our youth to literally reach for the stars.

I enjoyed meeting and working with you on this. Attached are some photos from the event.

Thank you again!

Best Wishes,
Velarie
(on behalf of the USA Science and Engineering Festival)

Heil Maintenance Professionals

Last year at the Maintworld Conference in Helsinki, a cameraman snapped a pic while Joel Leonard was polling the audience about who was going to retire in the next 5 and 10 years. Over 80% were or entering retirement age. Considering the amount of accrued knowledge, experience and wisdom walking out the door, and the lack of successsion development and formalized mentorship programs in the LEAN corporate environment we are truly in a Maintenance Crisis. However with the virtual simulation development efforts, Break Through Training, Occupyajob app and numerous skilled workforce campaigns underway, there is plenty of reason to be optimistic about the future. However much more needs to be done.  Tune in regularly to Plant Services Magazine for regular updates on the Maintenance Crisis!

India's first Reliability Maintenance Council is formed

Check out the link above to get more details on the newly formed India Reliability Maintenance Council- IRMC- Builds Capacity

New Indian Reliability Maintenance Council Forms

MUMBAI, INDIA -- When confronted with the enormous task of maintaining large, aging infrastructure and dealing with the equipment failures, production outages, budget cuts, deferred maintenance expenses, skilled workforce challenges and increasing inflationary costs, attendees of the “Fighting the Maintenance Crisis Workshop” decided to form the Indian Reliability Maintenance Council (IRMC).

The Engineering leader Mr. Sanjay Sorte says “IRMC forms to support the maintenance people who are fighting to get replacement for them and to create the awareness in new generation about maintenance. The motivation can be given to new people who think that the maintenance is a dirty job. We want to spread the awareness and the necessity of maintenance to the society and industries and we found that this is the platform to begin with. It starts with small group but I am sure one day it will be huge.”

This new organization plans to meet regularly to discuss challenges, tour industrial facilities throughout India and work to certify members. According to Mr. Sorte “This organization was created out of the frustration of lack of respect, appreciation and support for maintenance personnel and to help others realize that without proper reliability and maintenance programs our businesses and national economies will literally crumble before our eyes.”

Joel Leonard, a workforce development consultant based in the United States supports the board’s efforts and is connecting them with resources worldwide to help accelerate the growth and implementation of the IRMC. Leonard has been dubbed by American media as “The Maintenance Evangelist” because of his passion to elevate awareness of maintenance and engineering career paths.

Mumbai based JIF Communication PVT Ltd will be supporting IRMC by coordinating future conferences, workshops, certifications and industry tours.
